The Honourable  John Leslie Toohey AC

John Toohey served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory from 1977 to 1987.

Justice Toohey graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia and was called to the Western Australian Bar in 1952.

Justice Toohey was a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Western Australia from 1957 to 1958 and a Visiting Lecturer from 1959 to 1965 and 1953 to 1956.

Justice Toohey was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1968 and was President of the Western Australian Bar Association in 1970 and President of the Law Society of Western Australia from 1972 to 1973.

Justice Toohey was a Barrister with the Aboriginal Legal Service of North Western Australia in 1974 and was appointed as a Justice of the Federal Court of Australia in 1977, a position he held until 1987. He was also Aboriginal Land Commissioner from 1977 to 1982.

Justice Toohey was a Member of the Constitutional Commission from 1985 to 1986 and was appointed as a Justice of The High Court of Australia in 1987. Justice Toohey retired from The High Court in 1998 and is now a visiting Professor at the Law School of the University of Western Australia.

Justice Toohey was appointed a companion of the Order of Australia in 1988.

John Toohey Chambers in Darwin now bears his name.
